Measuring the Figure of the Earth. Maupertuis in Lapland 1736-1737

Mathematics: place, production and publication, 1730-1940

27 January 15:30 - 16:30

-

The French Royal Academy dispatched in 1736 an expedition led by the mathematician Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis to Swedish Lapland to measure the shape of the Earth. The issue was to prove whether our planet flattens at the poles as predicted by Newton in his Principia. In the lecture we survey the human destinies of the expedition and some of the mathematics of the problem.
