Anna-Karin Tornberg

Anna-Karin Tornberg received her PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She did a postdoc at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (New York University), where she was hired as an assistant professor, and later given tenure. Dr Tornberg moved back to Stockholm and KTH, where she was promoted to full professor in 2012. She is an elected member both of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences (KVA) and the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). She was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018, and a plenary speaker at the SIAM annual meeting in 2017 and the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) in 2019.

The research of Dr. Tornberg concerns the development of numerical methods for the solution of PDEs. One specific focus is on boundary integral methods and associated numerical techniques, often with application to fluid flows involving particles and drops. An important research question is how to make high-accuracy integral-equation methods truly scalable in three dimensions, where geometric complexity, close interactions, and the cost of accurate quadrature impose much stronger constraints than in two dimensions. This calls both for new techniques for evaluating singular and nearly singular layer and volume potentials and for extending the use of integral-equation formulations to broader classes of problems.
